Mapache : Swinging Stars

Words by Sally McVeay

I always thought growing up would be scary; and oh boy was I right… Sliding my way into adulthood, I realised how much fun being a kid was. For example I didn’t have to work to feel legitimate; and that’s about it. I’m still a kid in all other aspects.

Theres a sweet dose of liberation in being a kid, considering the various brainless things I love to break my way into; whether its messing up with people’s shopping carts in supermarkets by throwing things they didn’t mean to buy, or by giving stupider answers to stupid questions. My favourite would especially be when I’m vibing out in the style of “Mia Wallace” from pulp fiction. Alas, this can only be done with some good music that sparks that kind of energyyou know?

The atmosphere put out by this LA based producer just feels vintage and psychedelic, like I personally feel such music marinates the mischief in my own person. The structure of the track is super well balanced, but the flute is what really puts the emphasis on everything else. Else it would have been average-only. Its like the parmesan on your pasta. The cherry, on the other hand, would be the vocals present on this album. Mapache is made up of two vocalists, both having quite a different pitch, but are complimentarily nostalgic when put together. “Amazing” is a perfect example of what is being attempted to be communicated here.

I personally love only some tracks in this album rather than the whole album itself. “Swinging Stars” is not static as the genres oscillate between alternative, chill and psy rock. This could prove as fun for many but from a purist perspective I’d stick with the chill and psy-rock genres in one listening. When I put on my “alternative” hat, I’ll then listen to the others. Mixing genres feels like sugar-rush.

So that’s that! The album and the individual tracks are for sale on our favourite platform “Bandcamp”, as it connects you directly to the artist 🙂
